What is the bright line test?

The bright line test taxes any gain on residential property sold within two years of buying it, for sales from 1 July 2024.

New Zealand has no general capital gains tax, but the bright line test treats a quick resale like income. Exclusions apply, most commonly when the property was your main home.

Earlier sales used longer periods, so check the rules for the date you sold.
