What is a savings rate?

Your savings rate is the share of your income you keep instead of spending.

It is usually saving divided by income, after tax. For FIRE it matters more than investment returns early on, because it sets both how fast you invest and how much you need.

Example

Saving $2,000 of a $6,000 monthly take home pay is a savings rate of about 33%.
