What is a sinking fund?

A sinking fund is money you put aside regularly for a known future cost, such as insurance, rates or a holiday.

Spreading the cost over months turns a large bill into a small regular amount, so it does not wreck one month of your budget.

Example

Saving $100 a month for a $1,200 car insurance renewal.
