What is an ETF?

An exchange traded fund (ETF) is a fund you buy and sell on a stock exchange, usually tracking an index.

ETFs give broad diversification in a single purchase. In New Zealand, ETFs listed on the NZX are usually PIEs, while ETFs based overseas, such as many US listed funds, can fall under the FIF rules.
