What is an index fund?

An index fund tracks a market index, such as the NZX 50 or S&P 500, instead of picking individual shares.

Index funds spread your money across many companies at a low fee, which is why they are a common core holding for FIRE investors.

In New Zealand, index funds are offered as PIE funds or as ETFs, and overseas ETFs can fall under the FIF rules.
